Bit depth refers to how finely a light fixture can adjust its output, especially during dimming or transitions.
Color mixing accuracy refers to how precisely the fixture can reproduce intended colors, such as a specific pastel, saturated red, or daylight white.
Both affect visual performance, but in distinct ways. Confusing one for the other can lead to poor fixture selection or programming frustrations in live environments.
Bit depth determines how many discrete intensity levels a control channel (like dimming or color) can output.
8-bit = 256 levels (0–255)
16-bit = 65,536 levels (0–65,535)
More bits = smoother transitions, especially at low intensities.
In practice:
An 8-bit red channel goes from 0% to 100% in 256 steps.

True 16-bit resolution (not interpolated)
Adjustable dimming curves (linear, square, S-curve, etc.)
Color mixing accuracy refers to how well a lighting fixture matches requested color values, either from presets (like LEE/Rosco gels), DMX input, or visual palettes.
It depends on:
Number and type of LEDs used (RGB vs RGBW vs RGBWA+UV vs RGBA+Lime, etc.)
Spectral quality of each LED die
Firmware and color calibration algorithms
Calibration consistency across multiple fixtures
For example, a cheap RGB fixture may struggle to mix believable amber or white. But a calibrated RGBA+Lime fixture may produce:
Smoother pastels
Skin-tone-friendly warms
Cooler whites without magenta or green shift
Key parameters to look at:
Color calibration engine (does it use CIE color space or just raw ratios?)
Factory-calibrated color temperature presets
Color rendering index (CRI) or TLCI ratings for white output
Consistency across units (batch variation is a major issue for cheap gear)

Fade test: Set to 5% intensity and fade to 0%. Is it smooth or stepped?
Color match test: Try to render skin tones or saturated yellow. Is it accurate?
Consistency test: Compare 3–4 units side by side. Are the colors identical?
Low-output flicker test: View fixture through phone camera at low intensity.
Also ask manufacturers for:
Spectral charts
PWM specs
Dimming curve options
16-bit mode channel maps
Factory calibration reports
If a fixture can’t render subtle amber, CTO white, or blue fade-outs smoothly, it’s likely missing one or both critical qualities.
